Rhythm Readers: Early Literacy and Music Appreciation Using Children’s Books

About the Project

Phil Schaap was an American radio host/critic who specialized in jazz as a broadcaster, historian, educator, archivist, and producer. Vanderbilt Libraries holds Schaap’s large multi-format jazz collection including thousands of oral history interviews with jazz artists and recordings of his popular jazz shows such as Bird Flight and Traditions in Swing. These materials are currently being made available through Vanderbilt’s Aviary platform. In this fellowship, fellows highlighted the Phil Schaap Jazz Collection in order to share this jazz research with a wider audience. Fellows used primary source material to develop, record, and produce a podcast on a topic of their choosing as part of a social media promotional series for the Schaap collection.
