Library Policies

The Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries seek to create a welcoming, comfortable, and safe environment for our campus community and visitors. The library is a place for learning and reflection, and our staff supports these activities by providing helpful, responsive, and knowledgeable service. Mutual courtesy and respect among users and staff are essential to promoting the educational mission of the library. Each of the nine libraries has policies applicable to their users and materials. The following policies are specific to the Eskind Family Biomedical Library and Learning Center:

Access and Use

The Eskind Family Biomedical Library and Learning Center is open 7 days a week. Hours may vary during holidays and Winter Break. During restricted hours, access is limited to users with a current VU/VUMC badge. Users are required to swipe when entering the building. Please see library hours for additional details.

When the library space is closed, only authorized VUSM students, staff, and faculty are eligible to enter the building and strictly limited to the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors. Enter and exit via the South and West doors (i.e. side doors).

Circulation and Loan

Borrowing privileges and loan periods vary by user role and specific library policies. See this chart to find your role and see which borrowing, renewing, loan, and late fees apply to you. For any questions, please ask a librarian.

Protecting Our Resources

Food and drink is allowed in the library. Covered drink containers are recommended to protect materials and furnishings. Please discard your trash properly. Food and drink is not allowed in the History of Medicine Collections.

Minors in the Library

The safety, security, and behavior of children in the Eskind Family Biomedical Library and Learning Center are the responsibility of a parent or adult caregiver, not library staff.  Children under the age of 15 must always be under the direct supervision of a parent or adult caregiver.  A detailed description of this policy  is available.
