Welcome to the Virtual Reading Room

Old Main, c1905The Special Collections and University Archives Department of the Jean and Alexander Heard Library at Vanderbilt University is proud to announce a new web site called the Virtual Reading Room.

The Virtual Reading Room will complement the main Special Collections web page by providing easy online access to selected materials from our collections. The initial launch of the site contains information on the history of Vanderbilt University and George Peabody College; a digital version of our Southern Sociological Congress manuscript collection; a sampling of folk songs from the George Boswell Papers; photographs and short biographical sketches of members of the Fugitive and Agrarian literary groups; four subject guides to manuscript resources; and a selection of postcards depicting Vanderbilt University and George Peabody College.

These initial offerings will be supplemented regularly by additional subject guides, historical abstracts, and digitized manuscript collections. We hope that the Virtual Reading Room will provide deeper and more thorough access to our holdings by highlighting subject areas that may not be as accessible through traditional means. It will also provide Special Collections and University Archives a venue to showcase our premiere collections such as Fugitive and Agrarian material, Kelly Miller Smith's civil rights papers, and Performing Arts collections.
