Lucy Gage Papers
Biography/History
Lucy Gage was born in Portsmouth, Ohio on October 17, 1876. She took a Bachelor of Science degree from Columbia University in 1922 and continued to take classes and training in Columbia’s Teachers College over the next decade. She was a professor of early elementary education at George Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee from 1920 until her retirement in 1942. At that time there was published in editions of the Peabody Reflector a series of sketches about her life which “show her life in the fullness of its development.” These sketches are included here in the Personal and Biographical series of the papers. Lucy Gage earned great praise and recognition for her work in early childhood education both in her teaching and professional activities. She died on October 30, 1945.
Scope and Contents
This small collection, 1.5 Hollinger boxes (.63 linear feet), contains papers written by Miss Gage in manuscript, typescript, and carbon copy. Among them is a small autograph book made up at the time of her retirement in 1942 by her friends. Newspaper clippings about Miss Gage, many undated are included as well as a biographical paper telling of her pioneering efforts in early childhood education and legislation in Oklahoma in 1902. There is a letter from Agnes Snyder, Association for Childhood International, dated 1967 containing a bibliography of Miss Gage’s writings. It includes references to issues of the Peabody Reflector some of which do not appear in the Reflector indexes.
