The Hawkins School was founded by Charles Hawkins, a Vanderbilt graduate. Hawkins was an active champion of athletics and moral instruction in schools, and during World War I left the school to work with the Young Men’s Christian Association. Samuel Williams became the next headmaster, and the school became the Williams School for Boys in 1918, and was renamed again in 1922 to the Gallatin Private Institute, under care of Homer K. Bowen. Central High School, a public school, opened and drew most of GPI’s students, forcing the school to close in 1926.
