Allen Stanley Eskind Papers

Allen EskindBiography/History

Allen Stanley Eskind is a 1942 graduate of Vanderbilt University. He was born April 8, 1921 and is a lifelong resident of Nashville.  He attended Vanderbilt from 1938-1942, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. He was enlisted in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to April 24, 1947.  He served as a Navigation Officer on board the USS LCI(D) 227 and achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander. During the war he made a tour of duty in the South Pacific serving in such places as New Guinea, the Philippines, and Brisbane, Australia.

Scope and Contents

This Collection is .21 linear feet and includes Allen Eskind’s  WW II Journal in fifteen chapters and his official correspondence during his time of service with the U.S. Navy.

A photograph album in electronic digitized format that documents his Naval tour of duty during the second World War  will be available on line at the Vandy Goes to War: World War II Remembered  website.

  1. Correspondence—January 9, 1942- May 8, 1946—Official Navy documents from enlistment to release.
  2. World War II Journal: August 11, 1942 – May 22, 1946 ( in 15 chapters) by Allen Eskind (Includes a chronology of his time in the Navy).
  3. Newspaper article and photograph—“Former Vanderbilt Student Teaches Celestial Navigation”  (scanned copy with photo of Allen Eskind and Lucille Weingrun Feb. 1943?)
  4. 1942 Sideboy—a yearbook published by the ninth class United States Naval Reserve Midshipman’s School in New York City and which includes a photograph of Allen Eskind ( with the 52nd Company).  Allen Eskind in addition to being a student, was also on the photographers’ staff for this yearbook.
