Henry Beach Carre was born June 9, 1871 and died January 30, 1928. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Tulane in 1895 and his Bachelor of Divinity from Vanderbilt in 1898. After studying in Berlin and Marburg, Germany, he attended the University of Chicago and was awarded his Ph.D. in 1913. Ordained as a minister in the Southern Methodist Church in 1893, he also began teaching at Centenary College in Jackson, Louisiana in 1900. By 1902, he had become president of the college, and in 1903 he came to Vanderbilt to accept the Chair of Biblical Theology and English Exegesis in the School of Religion. At the time of his death, Prof. Carre was in Birmingham, Alabama raising funds for the Rural Church School, a program for under-privileged preachers conducted under the auspices of the Vanderbilt School of Religion.
