Biography/History
Bernard R. Breyer, a Nashville native born in 1919 received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Vanderbilt University in 1939, a Master's of Art
from Louisiana State University in 1940, and a PhD. from the University of Virginia in 1948. While at Vanderbilt he was a student of Donald
Davidson, a member of the Fugitive/Agrarian literary group, and corresponded with him for many years. He served in the United States Army during
World War II. Dr. Breyer later became a professor of English at Auburn University in Alabama.
These letters were received from Ward Allen.
Scope and Contents
The collection contains four letters, one typed and three handwritten, dated from 1945 to 1946. Two of the letters discuss military life in
World War I and World War II. Also included is a discussion regarding the Vanderbilt University athletic program and the upcoming football season.
