Finding Aids & Holdings
We have five types of material for which we provide finding aids - Archives, Serial Publications, Athletic Publications, Ephemeral Publications, and Give Away Publications. Most of this material is available for public viewing in Special Collections during regular business hours (8:30-4:30 M-F). The exceptions to this are restricted material (such as Board of Trust minutes and Provost records) and all material housed in the library annex off-campus (most of the material in the Archives category is at the annex). Annex material requires a 24-hour notice so the requested boxes can be brought over.
The archives contains records of the university and its departments. See the Archives Policy found on the Special Collections website for more details.
The Archives collects and maintains all serial publications affiliated with Vanderbilt University. While the majority of them are cataloged and searchable in Vanderbilt's online library catalog, Acorn, a great many more are uncataloged and not available for online searching. Every publication we maintain is included here, with finding aids available for some serials.
This collection includes 16mm film, VHS and other tape formats, and DVDs for Vanderbilt football and basketball (men's and women's). Inventory lists for each season and order pricing are included.
This collection includes media guides for every sport. Select sports also have game programs and other ephemeral pieces. Date ranges vary for each sport.
These publications differ from serials in that they are transient in nature. Most of the pieces in this collection are published erratically (or only once or twice). It includes promotional brochures, invitations, event flyers, posters, and catalogs.
Give Away Publications
In the archives, we sometimes get extra copies of materials we already have. Instead of discarding them, we are making them available to alumni of Vanderbilt University. This assorted material contains yearbooks, serials, and books published by and/or about Vanderbilt. Please contact us at for holdings information.
Note: Many of our finding aids are in PDF format.
