What does FindIt@VU do?

FindIt@VU provides direct links from a database citation to the full text of the article (if available) and other supporting resources. You'll also see FindIt@VU buttons in Acorn, Vanderbilt's online catalog. These buttons will enable you to link to available full text of many electronic journals and other e-resources.

How do I access FindIt@VU?

Acorn and some databases to which the library subscribes are FindIt@VU-enabled. Many of the records in these databases will display the FindIt@VU button  FindIt@VU. Clicking on it will open a window with a menu of service options.

What service options does FindIt@VU provide?

Because FindIt@VU is context specific, service options will change from citation to citation. When available, and as appropriate, FindIt@VU services offered will link to one or more of the following:

  • full text or abstract of the article
  • a search of Acorn, Vanderbilt's online catalog, to see if Vanderbilt owns the item
  • an Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery request form
  • a search of other library catalogs
  • a Web search using the words from the citation title

Why is the full text not always available?

The option to link to full text is shown on the FindIt@VU menu when the Library has subscribed to the full text of the journal title or other electronic resource. (See below for exceptions to this.) In many cases, if the option to link to full text is not on the menu, then the Vanderbilt Libraries do not license the full text for the particular title or the title may not be in full text. If the full text link is not shown, be sure to check the link labeled "See if this item is available in the Vanderbilt Libraries" to see if the journal title or other resource is available in print form.

Why is the full text option not available when I know the library has electronic access?

FindIt@VU draws upon a database that tells the services when an item is available electronically. Journals and other items need to be added to the database on a continuing basis, so it may be that for particular items there will be no full text option on the FindIt@VU menu though we have electronic access to full text. In other cases, we are unable to configure a full text source to work with FindIt@VU or publishers block access to their most recent articles for several months after publication. If the full text link is not shown on the menu, be sure to select the link labeled "See if this item is available in the Vanderbilt Libraries" to see if this is an item for which we have electronic access (i.e., one that has not been added to the FindIt@VU database) or if it is available in print form.

Can I use FindIt@VU services from off campus?

Yes. Vanderbilt users with VUNet IDs can use the FindIt@VU-enabled databases when off-campus.

Which resources are FindIt@VU-enabled?

FindIt@VU enabled resources include Acorn, DiscoverLibrary, and other databases where you see the FindIt@VU button.
