Tips for Graduate Students (PDF)

1. Finding Books

Acorn - online catalog of books and other materials held at VU.
WorldCat - largest online catalog of books held in libraries around the world.
Interlibrary Loan - order any book not owned by VU via InterLibrary Loan service, identify book using WorldCat.

2. Finding Articles & Information: Earth Science Databases

GeoRef - (1785+) Best database for earth sciences literature.
GeoScienceWorld - search 32 full-text earth science journals and GeoRef simultaneously.
Web of Science - (1965+) Science Citation Index; including geology and related subjects.

3. Find Articles & Information: Other Databases

Compendex - (1884+) Comprehensive engineering database.
Google Scholar - includes findit@VU links to VU's online journals..
Agricola - catalog of the National Agricultural Library and its article citation database
Knovel - (Online Interactive Science and Engineering Books and Databases)
Dissertation Abstracts - (ProQuest Digital Dissertations)

4. Finding Specific Journals

Acorn - search or browse by periodical title. Records for the print journal vs. the electronic copy are separate. If you see a findit@VU button click on it for information on the availability of online issues. On the print journal record look for the section labeled HOLDINGS for information about the availability of print volumes in the STACKS or at the ANNEX.

5. E-Journal Locator - search by title keyword or browse A-Z through the list of electronic journals available online. Click the button to view availability.
