SALALM XLIVThe Setting: Nashville, TennesseeNashville, Tennessee’s state capital, is just over 200 years old but what a 200 years they have been! Visitors can share in its earliest settlement at Fort Nashborough on the Cumberland River. They can visit the homes of its most prominent early citizens, particularly The Hermitage, built by Andrew Jackson, 7th president of the United States, and Belle Meade Plantation, queen of the Tennessee plantations. Twentieth-century elegance is stunningly captured in the buildings and grounds of Cheekwood, where a quiet lunch and a stroll through the gardens recreate a feeling of gracious living in the early half of the century. A meal at the Westin Hermitage Hotel is a trip back to the 1920s, when suffragettes stalked the corridors seeking the final votes that gave Tennessee the distinction of being the pivotal state in giving women in the US the vote. These days, Nashville may be best known as Music City USA. The broadcast and recording industry support not just the Grand Ole Opry, but also a diverse and thriving entertainment industry, particularly downtown near Riverfront Park, where a ride on artist Red Grooms’ newly-opened Tennessee Fox Trot Carousel is a must for visitors. Second Avenue offers numerous nightspots for hearing country, classical, jazz, rock and bluegrass entertainment. Yet-to-be-discovered as well as well-known entertainers perform at sites such as the Caffé Milano and the Bluebird Café. Nashville has an excellent symphony that is becoming widely known through its recordings and appearances throughout the nation, including Carnegie Hall. Opryland Hotel is a setting for an evening of dinner, with its many acres of enclosed gardens, fountains, riverboats, shops, and entertainment. Its miles of indoor conservatories are truly remarkable. One can enjoy an evening on a river taxi or the General Jackson, a paddlewheeler. In addition to the art treasures at Cheekwood, Centennial Park, near the hotel, contains a full-size replica of the Parthenon of Athens. Inside the Parthenon is a remarkable statue of Athena, the largest indoor sculpture in the world, and an art gallery. The Stieglitz Collection at Fisk University includes works by Picasso, O’Keeffe, Cézanne, Rivera, and Renoir.
