Tennessee Library Association
Government Documents Round Table
Action Plan 2005-2006
Our Charge: To keep Tennesseans informed and aware of government information as a useful resource
and to advocate for free and equitable access, whether in print or electronic form, to that information.
GOAL 1:
The Government Documents Round Table of Tennessee(TLA-GODORT) will provide a forum for the discussion of issues,
opportunities, and challenges relating to local, state, federal, and international government information.
TLA-GODORT will promote instruction, training, and consultation for Tennessee librarians in the acquisition,
access, bibliographic control, and use of government information through avenues such as: programs at the
annual Spring TLA conference, the Fall Tennessee Depository Library Conference, and ongoing dialogue via the Tennessee Depository listserv, TNGOVDOC-L.
TLA-GODORT will promote sharing, preservation and stewardship of depository resources working in conjuction with
the Federal Regional Depository Librarian and the Chair, Advisory Committee on State Documents.
GOAL 2:
TLA-GODORT will monitor the changes to the Federal Depository Library Program and work
to respond in ways that help continue to ensure free, permanent public access to the information needed by
the public.
GOAL 3:
TLA-GODORT will work to help improve and enhance the state of Tennessee goverment information dissemination
and preservation. This work will be carried out closely with the Advisory Committee on State Documents,
Tennessee State Library and Archives, and others.
GOAL 4:
TLA-GODORT will recruit new members. If membership does not increase after January 2006, we
intend to begin discussion within TLA-GODORT and the TLA Board about restructuring. Our goal is to ensure that an
entity within TLA exists that accurately reflects the changing government information environment in which we are
now operating. The number of stand-alone, government information departments in Tennessee libraries continues to
decrease as they are dissolved or merged with other departments. As a result, librarians may find their jobs focused
less on government information and more on reference or technical services. This change may be reflected in the
TLA groups they join.
