Microprint and Microcard Reading and Printing

The large boxes along the walls of the Media Center and those just past the microform machines on the 4th floor contain microprints.  These are similar to microfiche, except that they use an opaque card instead of a transparent sheet.  Our holdings also include microcards which are just microprints on smaller cards.  Both types of item are always positive.  Note that microprints and microcards have separate lines on the statistics sheet; they must be reshelved and recorded like microfilm and microfiche.

The Microprint Reader nearest the 4th floor office shares a printer with one of the Canon PC Printer 80 machines and also uses ScreenScan equipment.  Its ScreenScan control has only a dial to adjust intensity and a Print button.  There is also a microprint reader in one of the carrels in the sixth floor Media Center.

Using Microprint Readers

1.      Pull the carrier toward you until the glass plate is raised.

2.      Place the microprint, printed side up, under the glass plate on the carrier.

3.      Turn on the power switch and slide the carrier to the desired place.

4.      Adjust focus using the knob located on the front of the machine.  Focus adjustment on these machines is very limited.

5.      The Zoom function on the machine is broken.  Pulling or pushing on the focus knob will not significantly change the size of the image.

6.      When printing on this machine, it is advised that the patron hold the carrier in place while pressing the print button and waiting for the image to be scanned.  At times the carrier will move on its own, resulting in an unreadable copy.
