Manual Microfilm/fiche Readers

The Dukane Manual Microfilm Readers

These microfilm readers look like the smoke hood of an oven with the film carrier located at the top.  None of these machines are attached to a printer.  One such machine is the first machine to the left as you look out the right-side door of the GIMS desk.  There are also three readers located in carrels in the sixth-floor Media Center.

  1. Remove the film from its box and dust wrapper.

  1. Load the film onto the axle on the left of the film carrier.  The reel must clear the raised area at the axle’s base or film will not wind correctly onto the take-up reel.  On these machines, the loaded film should come up from the bottom of the reel.  (Note: Each type of machine has an illustration of properly loaded film.)

  1. Run the leader underneath the glass slides and thread in into the slot on the take-up reel.

  1. Turn on the power switch located near the bottom of the machine.  Using the crank on the right, move the film to the desired place.

  1. Adjust zoom and focus using the controls located on the compound lens.  The film carrier may also be rotated to orient the image on the screen.

  1. When finished viewing a film, rewind it onto its original reel, remove the reel, replace the dust wrapper, and return the reel to its box.

Microfiche Readers

Three microfiche readers which aren’t attached to printers are located in carrels in the sixth floor Media Center.  The microprint reader on the sixth floor looks very similar to these microfiche readers.  To tell the difference, turn on the power and determine whether the bulb is shining from above or below the carrier.  Since fiches are transparent, the bulb shines from underneath to project an image on the screen.  With microprint (or opaque) readers, the bulb shines from above and magnifies the image printed on opaque cards.  Note:  All of the microfilm readers attached to printers can also read and print microfiche.

  1. Pull the fiche carrier toward you until the glass plate is raised.

  1. Remove the fiche from its dust sleeve.

  1. Place the fiche under the glass plate on the fiche carrier.

  1. Turn on the power switch and slide the fiche carrier to the desired place.

  1. Adjust zoom and focus using the controls located on the compound lens.

  1. When finished viewing a fiche, return it to its dust sleeve.
