Using the Canon Microfilm Scanner 300
(aka the Digital Scanner)
The Canon
machine on the right directly outside the GIMS office is a scanner that
operates through the computer to its left.
It not only makes copies, but can also save images onto a diskette, CD,
or USB device. Detailed instructions for
this machine are also posted beside it. IMPORTANT:
If the screen is dark DO NOT FLIP THE POWER SWITCH. Press the green button labeled “LIGHT” and
the screen will appear momentarily. If
the machine is turned off, it will require several minutes to restart properly.
To Print From
Microfilm/Microfiche
- Load
film onto the film carriage. The
film carriage has standard forward, rewind, zoom, focus, and image
rotation features.
- Click
on the Start menu, select All Programs, and open Capture Perfect 1.0
- To
print an image, click on the “File” menu and select “Scan to Page.” The scanner will scan the image and
display it on the computer screen as it will appear when printed. You can do this more than once if you
need to adjust the image.
- If the
image is too dark or too light, you can adjust it by using the intensity
controls under the scanner screen.
If the image is a negative (white print on a dark background), you
can set it to make a positive image using the button on the far left end
of the control panel below the scanner screen.
- When
you are ready to print, go to the “File” menu on the computer screen and
select “Print.” Make sure HP Laserjet 4000 is
selected in the printer name box. Click “OK” on the box that appears on
the screen. Pages will print on the
laser printer beneath the computer table.
It may take a moment for the printer to print the first page.
- Advance
to the next page you want to print and scan that page. Pages must be
scanned and printed one at a time.
- When
finished, rewind the microfilm and remove it from the carriage. Do not turn off either the computer
or the scanner.
To Print Multiple Pages at a
Time
- Click
on the “File” menu and “Setup Print”. Make sure HP Laserjet
4000 is selected in the printer name box.
- Click
on “File” and “Scan to Print”. The “Scan Batch to Print Setting” dialog
box appears. Again, make sure HP Laserjet 4000
is selected in the printer name box. Then click “OK”.
- The
“Start Scanning” dialog box appears. Select on “Start Scanning”. As the
printer is printing one image, you can advance the film and select
“Continue Scanning” to scan and print the next page.
To Save Images as a File (USB
or diskette)
- Click
“File” and “Scan to Page”.
- When
the image is ready, click on the “File” menu and select “Save As”.
- Save
the file to a diskette or USB device.
Give the file a name.
Specify file type, or accept the default. Like other public stations, this will
not allow you to save to the “C” drive.
- When
finished, rewind the microfilm and remove it from the carriage. Do not exit the application.
To Burn Images to a CD-Rom or
DVD
- Click
“File” and “Scan to Page”.
- When
the image is ready, click on the “File” menu and select “Save As”. Save
the document to the Z://THAWSPACE drive. It is
best to save the images as a TIFF file. This is the best quality image. If
you are saving multiple images, you may want to create a folder.
- From
the main computer Start menu, open “Sonic”>>Record Now Plus.
- Click
on “Add Files & Folders” to select the files you want to burn to the
disc. When you are ready, select “Burn”. Do not close the session until
you have burned everything you plan on saving. Some CD-Roms will not allow you to add anything else to
the disc after ending the session.
