Census: Data Centers

State Data Centers--U.S. Census Bureau
A cooperative program between the states and the Census Bureau that was created in 1978 to make data available locally to the public through a network of state agencies, universities, libraries, and regional and local governments.

Tennessee State Data Centers are:

• Center for Business and Economic Research Univ. of TN-Knoxville (State Data Center)
• The University of Memphis, Bureau of Business and Economic Research

• Government Information Sharing Project--Oregon State Univ.
  Includes 1990 Census of Population and Housing Summary Tape Files (STFs) 1 & 3; Consolidated Federal Funds Report, 1987-1996; Earnings by Occupation and Education: 1990; 1992 Economic Census; Equal Employment Opportunity File; U.S. Imports/Exports History: 1992-1996; Population Estimates by Age, Sex, and Race, 1990-1994; Regional Economic Information System (REIS), 1969-1996; and USA Counties.

• United States Historical Census Data Browser--Univ. of Virginia
  Data on the people and the economy of the U.S. for each state and county from 1790 to 1970. Produced by the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) from U.S. Bureau of the Census data.

• Interactive Data Resources at SSDC--Univ. of Virginia Geospatial and Statistical Data Center (Geostat)
  Includes County and City Data Books (1988 and 1994); County Business Patterns (1977- ); Regional Economic Information System (REIS) (1969- ); U.S. Imports and Exports of Merchandise (1989- ); and Uniform Crime Report County Data (1990- ).

• Social Science and Government Data Library-- Univ. of Calif., Berkeley
  Includes 1990 Census of Population and Housing Summary Tape Files (STFs) 1 (questions asked every household) & 3 (questions asked of 1 in 7 households weighted to represent the total population). Also includes Subject Summary Tape Files (SSTFs) 2, 3, and 5.
