This is a selected list of videos that are owned by the Heard Libraries and relate to teaching diversity and multiculturalism. Most of them have been produced since 1995. Books in the Heard Library system may be found by searching in ACORN, the online catalog. Roland "Chris" Christensen, who has taught for nearly 50 years at the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration, initiates a group of apprentice teachers into the challenges of discussion leading by analyzing a teaching case. Includes classroom scenes, reflections on teaching by Professor Christensen, and interviews with the participants.

Faces of diversity.
This video is produced by the Office of Services of Students with Disabilities at the University of Saskatchewan. This production introduces students who honestly describe and celebrate what makes them unique. Twelve students from diverse backgrounds were interviewed. Their unforgettable stories may generate anger, compassion, and sadness, but they also serve to inspire the viewer to see "difference" in a positive light. This video is designed to generate reflection and open discussion about issues such as disability, sexuality, and race. A facilitator's guide is included with the tape.

How to speak: Lecture tips from Patrick Winston. 45 min.
In this skillful lecture, Professor Patrick Winston of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology offers tips on how to give an effective talk, cleverly illustrating his suggestions by using them himself. He emphasizes how to start a lecture, cycling in on the material, using verbal punctuation to indicate transitions, describing "near misses" that strengthen the intended concept, and asking questions. He also talks about using the blackboard, overhead projections, props, and "how to stop."

In Chinese culture, western stresses on individualism, delegation and empowerment are replaced by an emphasis on community and the family, a lean hands-on management style and a Confucian deference to authority. Through interviews with innovators, entrepreneurs and managers in both China and Hong Kong, this program explores the effects these cultural differences have on the way business is done in Chinese cultures.

This program refutes the melting pot theory, explaining that employees do not-and should not be expected to-set aside their particular cultural values when they come to work. The most successful organizations and managers are those who understand diversity and seek to profit from it; this program presents the views of African Americans, Hispanics, Asians, and Native Americans who share their work experiences and demonstrate that what minorities want from coworkers and management is no more than an open mind and a chance to make good.

A private universe. Pyramid Film and Video.
This film demonstrates how erroneous but entrenched ideas interfere with learning by showing how difficult it is to unlearn an incorrect concept. Most Harvard graduates could not respond correctly to why we have seasons on the earth. The film demonstrates this by interviewing 9th graders. An honors student has her own conclusion about the seasons and the phases of the moon.

Race, ethnicity, and demographic change in the American marketplace. By Luis Ricardo Fraga. Kantola Productions, 2003. 59 min.
Fraga presents information on demograhic changes, affirmative actions policies, and the shifting balance of regional electorates. He argues that inclusiveness can establish a competitive advantage as an investment in the future.

Race in the classroom: A multiplicity of experience. Co-produced with the Harvard Office for Race Relations and Minority Affairs. 19 min.
Five vignettes depicting moments in college courses when the race or culture of participants, a race-related topic, or racial dynamics become a major factor in teaching and learning. Each vignette is based on an actual classroom incident. These scenes do not offer specific answers, but are intended instead to spark discussion on these important and difficult issues. Includes a 60-page Facilitator's Handbook.

This videotape comprises eight three-minute vignettes that dramatize a variety of the challenges associated with teaching students with disabilities. Some of these include: A student with dyslexia who has engaged a tutor to help her with assignments; A student with at hearing impairment who wants to use a note-taker in the classroom; and, A student with a chronic health condition who requests an extension.

Three models of collaborative learning -- an introductory physics lecture, a lesson in celestial navigation, and a section in physical chemistry -- taped in Harvard classrooms. In each class, students discuss problems and devise solutions with the help of their instructors and peers. Includes interviews and classroom scenes. Women in the classroom: Cases for discussion. 27 min.
Five short vignettes depict classroom moments when the role of women is an issue, either because of the gender of the teacher or students, or because of the topic under discussion. The examples can be used to initiate discussions about how gender issues affect learning, with an underlying goal of making classrooms more open for women. The problems illustrated include gaining authority, gendered modes of expression, male and female dominance, race and gender conflicts, and faculty responsibility. A facilitator's guide is included with each tape.
