Central Library Green Renovation Summary
LEED Silver Certification
The U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Green Building Rating System is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. The Central Library’s 2010 renovation of the 2nd and 4th floors is one of Vanderbilt University’s total of 12 LEED-Certified building projects. Improvements were made in the following areas that qualified for LEED credits:
EFFICIENT LIGHTING:
- Installation of an Encelium lighting system and occupancy sensors to automatically control lighting
- Enhanced use of natural lighting (‘daylight harvesting’)
- Installation of 30% more efficient lights (T-8 fluorescents)
- Reduced ‘lighting power density” overall by 23%.
GREEN CONSTRUCTION:
- Use of recycled content in 10% of furniture and furnishings purchased
- Use of low emission flooring materials
- Use of low-VOC finishes, paints and adhesives during the reconstruction process
- Purchase of 20% of construction and furniture from within a radius of 500 miles
INDOOR AIR QUALITY
- Management of indoor air quality during construction phase
- Use of low-emission materials and finishes resulted in post construction LEED requirements for indoor air quality
RECYCLING:
- Recyling containers placed in 25 locations throughout the building
- 75-80% of demolition waste recycled
HOUSEKEEPING:
-
Use of green cleaning products
WATER CONSERVATION:
-
Installation of dual flush/low flow toilets and waterless urinals resulting in 35% less water usage in project spaces.
- Installation of low flow faucet fixtures
GREEN POWER
- <
At least 2-year “green energy” contract for a minimum of 50% of building electricity in renovated areas
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
-
Installation of HVAC and building mechanical systems that meet efficiency requirements
- 100% of all new equipment installing ENERGY STAR qualified
Other pre-existing LEED qualifying areas:
COMMUNITY CONNECTIVITY
-
Located within ½ mile of residential area and w/in ½ mile of 10 basic services
- Pedestrian access between building and services.
BUS STOP PROXIMITY
-
Within ¼ mile walking distance to bus stop
