COPYRIGHT PERMISSIONS OFFICE MOVING TO LIBRARY

UNIVERSITY POLICY ON COPYRIGHT FEES FOR MATERIALS ON ELECTRONIC RESERVE

July 7, 2001

The Copyright Clearance Center, formerly a unit of University Printing Services, moved to the University Library on July 2, 2001. The Center will continue to be responsible for securing copyright permissions for Class Paks. The procedure for submitting Class Pak orders will not change. The Center is located in the Interlibrary Loan Office (Room 608) in the General Library Building. The Center's phone number is unchanged (936-4627), though its fax number has changed to 343-7276. You can continue to send email to .

The Center has moved to the Library because of the growing use of electronic reserves as an alternative to Class Paks. Because the Library licenses a vast number of electronic books, journals, and other full-text documents, it is in a position to advise faculty who seek to place materials on e-reserve. Faculty can generally link to materials licensed by the Library without paying copyright permission fees. The University attorney has advised that, to comply with federal law, permission be obtained and any associated fees be paid for all non-licensed copyrighted materials that faculty copy and place on e-reserve using the Library's site, course-management software, or their own class websites. The Provost has therefore stipulated that faculty must contact the Center or the e-reserve unit in their library to secure permission before placing any copyrighted materials on ERes, Prometheus, Blackboard, or other websites for class reading. Locating the Center in the Library will make it possible for the permissions manager to keep abreast of Library licenses and avoid unnecessary permissions charges. Copyright fees for electronic reserves and website permissions will be charged back to individual colleges.
