Computers in Central Reference

Computer workstations located in the Central Library's Reference area are available for searching Acorn, the online catalog and using any of the large selection of research databases made available by the Vanderbilt Libraries. The Reference computers offer easy access to OAK, Secure OASIS, Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, and Powerpoint). All the networked Reference workstations are linked to laser printers through the VUPrint system. There is a duplex printer in the Reference alcove for double-sided printing.

Users should close all software windows when finished in order to protect their privacy. This is especially important if you have logged into a personal account (Acorn, OAK, OASIS, etc.). When using library computers please save your personal information or data externally. Examples include a diskette (A:\ drive), VUSpace, USB Memory Key ("thumb drives") but not the workstation hard drive (C:\). All your information on the hard drive will be lost if the workstation freezes and has to be restarted.

Please keep in mind that first priority on all workstations is given to academic use. During busy times please be considerate of others who may need to use our workstations. Please restrict recreational use of the workstations to less busy times when workstations are not needed for academic work.

One CD-ROM station provides access to the few databases that cannot be made available through our library network. This workstation also has a self-service flatbed scanner, a CD-ROM burner, and a DVD-ROM drive.

For visually impaired library users, there is a workstation with a large monitor and ZoomText and Jaws software (see Software and Equipment for Visually Impaired Library Users).
