General
Facilities:
We placed an order for a 3M self-check kiosk to be placed adjacent to the Criculation
desk and made arrangements for electrical and network connections.
Circulation (Janet Thomason)
Stacks
Maintenance:
Students continued
shifting on floors six, seven, and eight. Kelly Lockaby continued to
pull books to be transferred to the Annex. She pulled from the eighth floor,
while student
Abhay Karandikar shifted,
both working to make room from an anticipated set of over 100 books with DS
call numbers. A moratorium on Annex transfers limited the number of carts we
were able to send to the Annex. A patron reported graffiti on several carrels
on eight; Housekeeping staff and Dewey James cleaned it up.
Reserves:
Materials continued to be placed on reserve. The overall
semester total of reserve lists received and processed is 68. All ereserve materials
to be scanned are for courses that already exist. We will send a combined letter
soliciting
for the fall semester for
media, print and electronic reserves.
Periodicals
223 periodical volumes sent to the bindery.
71 replacement labels made for the Periodical Reading Room.
324 bound periodicals returned from the bindery and prepared for shelving.
19 boxes of microfilm received from Marking/Binding. Notations made for the newspapers to be pulled and recycled.
Circulation:
Janet gave Ramona Romero a tour of Circulation. Staff held a luncheon
for circulation staff and students as well as Robyn Harris and Johnnie
Anthony on Mar. 5. Debra Stephens from Science and Engineering covered
the desk for us. We received five new laptops,
replacing our five oldest laptops. We created item records and made labels to
circulate the new laptops.
Collection Development (Mary Beth Blalock)
Personnel:
Two candidates, Deborah Lilton and Glenda
Insua, interviewed for the Bibliographer/Reference Librarian position in English,
Film Studies, and Theatre. All Collection Development staff members participated
in the interviews and took advantage of the opportunity to learn more about
each candidate.
Electronic
Resources:
The Electronic Resources Committee met on Mar.
14 and 28. The Committee approved trials for American History & Culture:
Sabin Americana (1500-1926), Argumenty i Fakty Online, Latino
American Experience, Nineteenth Century Newspapers, and the Papers
of George Washington. We approved three free resources for the Articles
& Databases page: Social Science Research Network, Encyclopedia
of Economics and Business History (E.H.Net), and Women Artists Archives
Online. We did not approve the CQ Supreme Court Collection for subscription.
Some members expressed interest in participating in a shared-cost subscription
to Euromonitor if the Management Library decides to subscribe to this
database in the future. Committee members are Janice Adlington, Yvonne
Boyer, David Carpenter, Sue Erickson, John Haar, Susan
Widmer, and Mary Beth Blalock (Chair). We welcome your suggestions
for new electronic resources.
Vendor Presentation:
Barbara Parish, Thomson Gale, gave a demonstration
of several electronic resources during our monthly meeting time slot. During
her presentation, we were able to identify two databases of interest.
Outreach:
Peter Brush attended a History Department
lecture by Professor Tom Schwartz on the topic of his forthcoming book, a biography
of Henry Kissinger. He also gave a library tour to a prospective history graduate
student.
Yvonne met with two candidates for the nineteenth century position in the Department of the History of Art.
Paula Covington met with a Genealogical Society representative, Paul Gherman, and others regarding the expansion of the Cuban Digital Collection and attended panels of the Caribbean Writers' Symposium as well as a reception for the awarding of three Chancellors' Professors of Spanish. She discussed her upcoming book buying trip to Peru with Professor Tiffiny Tung and met with the Director of the Center for Latin American and Iberian Studies to discuss NRC grant progress and an interim report (written by Paula). In addition, she met with a Portuguese faculty candidate, two faculty members regarding their research, and a potential history graduate student with a Latin American focus. Paula wrote an article for the Center for Research Libraries Global Resources Newsletter about Vanderbilt's Mesoamerican collection, book purchase trips, and development strategies for our participation in the Global Resources Project.
Ramona Romero attended an American Institute of Architects lecture at the Parthenon and joined several members of the Classics faculty and the speaker for dinner following the lecture. She had an introductory meeting with the Classics department to learn more about the department and to answer their questions. She also attended a graduate student presentation of a paper the student will deliver at a conference next month.
Two French classes visited the Bandy Center for a review of French literature from La Fontaine to Baudelaire. Professor Lisa Weiss provided an overview of the Center and showed an example of a La Fontaine fable book dated 1755 with important engravings, courtesy of Special Collections.
Sue Erickson created a spreadsheet for the Communication Studies library representative to compare coverage overlap and gaps between ComAbstracts and Communications and Mass Media Complete. She also continued compiling the question inventory for the 2007 Engaging Nashville Survey.
Mary
Beth attended numerous meetings with bibliographers and others relating to collection
development issues. These included several training sessions with Ramona and
visits to Order Services and Cataloging, meetings of the Search Committee, vendor
representatives, Yuh-Fen Benda (Chinese language title requests) and
Sara Byrd (Film Studies and Theatre).
Projects:
Yvonne worked on two projects. First she began
planning for the Art Libraries Society of North America-Southeast Chapter meeting
which will be held at Vanderbilt on Nov. 9-10, 2007. She also worked on the
Gilbert Sigaux Collection statement and image selection for the ARL 75th Anniversary
book celebrating research.
David
Carpenter, Sue Erickson, Amy Stewart-Mailhiot, and Mary Beth continued work
on a revision of the CD-ROM procedures.
Gifts:
Bryan Kurowski received eight gifts.
Committee
and Other Activities:
Bryan provided Collection Manager and WorkFlows training for Ramona.
Ramona was busy learning more about the Central Library, Technical Services, approval plans, and selection and order procedures.
Susan Widmer attended the ACRL conference in Baltimore.
Government Information/Media Services (Amy Stewart-Mailhiot)
Amy, Teri Bante, and Brian Boling met to discuss the possibility of a revamped media services web page with a major focus on providing instruction for services we offer to students and faculty. As part of this web site project, Brian pulled together a list of useful media links for on-campus, local, and national groups, as well as a list of educational media vendors for faculty and bibliographers. Teri's work on the project included beginning work with Chris Benda on an AV and microform equipment list for Heard libraries webpage.
With a continued focus on copyright compliance, Brian collected information about the public performance rights policies of the various vendors previously used by the library. Brian also began the process of ordering replacement DVD copies for videos of questionable origin.
Teri organized a large collection of duplicate copies of Sudoc and Dewey items to offer to other depositories. This work helped substantially in clearing out shelves for future growth in the DVD collection. Teri also oversaw the completion of the Department of Justice section of the inventory project. This included cataloging 26 pieces. Staff and patrons alike will be pleased to know that Teri has updated our congressional information finding aid to reflect our holdings for the Serial Set and Congressional Bills collections.
Amy continued to work with Sue Erickson and Sara Byrd on a project to improve access to newspapers. Amy also led the staff through a training session on posting to the GIMS blog.

Reference (David Carpenter)
Special
Projects:
Sara Byrd devoted considerable time to planning for a seating sweep project,
designed to collect information on the availability and use of study spaces
in the Heard libraries. She met several times with Julie Blagojevich and with
John Haar and David to discuss logistics and scheduling. She also developed
maps for the seating sweep paths, finalized tally sheets, created training materials,
and conducted two training sessions.
Melinda prepared instructions for our student assistant Sara Godchaux so that Sara could move copies of handouts for library instruction sessions to a network directory easily accessible for Central Reference librarians. Librarians will place copies of newly created class handouts there as well. This will help Cenref librarians easily consult or make a copy of a class handout when needed, without the clutter of paper copies left on the counter behind the reference desk. (Thanks Melinda and Sara!)
At David's request, Sara completed an updating and revamping of our Book Reviews: A Brief Guide with Selected Resources subject guide.
Sara and later Sue Erickson volunteered to sit at a temporary desk in the lobby, with a laptop computer and a sign inviting questions, to consider factors related to potentially creating a new reference desk in a location nearer to the library entrance. Sue and Sara reported back to their reference colleagues on the results of this experiment.
Training
and Professional Development Activities:
Sue Erickson attended the
ACRL National Conference in Baltimore. Highlights were representing Anthropology
and Sociology Section at the First-Time Attendee Orientation and at the ANSS
"dinner with colleagues". Sue attended ACRL sessions including: The
Reference Question--Where Has Reference Been? Where is Reference Going?; Subject
Search Disconnect; Library Mashups for the Virtual Campus: Using Web 2.0 Tools
to Create Current Awareness Resources; Reflecting on Online Instruction and
Learning: Best Practices and Trends in Information Literacy Tutorials; and Reinventing
Library Services for Undergraduates: Strategies for Reaching Millennial Students.
David scheduled tours of other Vanderbilt libraries for Ramona Romero and--at Flo Wilson's request--included two other recently hired librarians (Cynthia Kutka and Steven Nordstrom) in the tours. David also met with Ramona to continue her reference training and orientation to the library and Vanderbilt. Sara and Sue Erickson provided Ramona with subject area reference resources training.
Sara trained Larry Romans on using Bloglines.
