Stacks
Maintenance:
Student Abhay
Karandikar finished shifting in the DS call numbers and began shifting in
the DG call numbers to free up shelves for a large set of books arriving in
March. To free additional space, supervisor Matt McKee began pulling
books in this area to transfer to the Annex. He received several Annex
transfer lists from Peter Brush
to help alleviate overcrowding in the DG-DT area. Additionally Matt and student
worker Matt Charles worked on pulling and transferring to the Annex books
from the OCLC unique titles list. Moriah Scarbrough and Erika Walston
shifted in separate areas on the seventh floor. Jenny Crapser continued
to work on barcoding periodicals to be transferred to the Annex.
Reserves:
We
received and
processed seven new lists of print
reserves, bringing the overall total to 60 lists for the semester. We received
no new ereserve lists, though we did receive materials to add to an existing
course. LaRentina Gray sent a copy of her current reserve memo to John
Haar so that he could write a combined memo to faculty that would incorporate
print, electronic and video reserves.
Periodicals
156 volumes returned from the bindery and prepared for shelving.
30 replacement labels made for the periodical reading room.
18 boxes of microfilm received from Marking/Binding. Notations were made for the newspapers to be pulled for recycling.
211 volumes of periodicals sent to the bindery.
Circulation:
Janet finished the Leisure Reading Collection weeding project and met with the
Divinity Library to discuss their assuming responsibility for emptying the 21st
Ave. book return. Divinity has since decided this task cannot be incorporated
into their current workflow this semester.
Collection Development (Mary Beth Blalock)
Personnel:
We all welcomed Ramona Romero as our bibliographer
for Classics, Philosophy, and Psychology and look forward to working with her
during the coming weeks as she learns more about collection development, faculty,
and the departments she serves.
Two candidates, Maura Mandyck and Sara Franks, interviewed for the Bibliographer/Reference Librarian position for English, Film Studies and Theatre. The interview schedules included dinner prior to the interview, full-day interview sessions, and a tour of Nashville the following day. Collection Development staff as well as other library staff members were involved throughout the interview process. Two additional candidates will interview in March. Search Committee members are Melinda Brown, Susan Widmer, Susan Bell, Mark Schoenfield, Lisa Shipman, and Mary Beth Blalock (Chair).
Department

Celia Walker joined
us for our February meeting to show us Faculty News and to discuss adding new
resources and other information that bibliographers thought would be of interest
to faculty and students.
Electronic
Resources:
The Electronic Resources Committee met on Feb.
14 and 28. The Committee approved the purchase of House & Senate Journals,
Series I, (1789-1817) and Senate Executive Journals, Series, I (1789-1866)
as soon as funding is available. We also approved an upgrade to the Scholar's
Edition of Women and Social Movements in the United States along with
trials of EconLit Full-Text, Magill On History, DaSinD,
and The Making of the Modern World, 1480-1850 (Goldsmiths' Kress Library
of Economic Literature). The subscription to FactSearch
will continue even though the database is no longer updated. We did not approve
International Strategic Analysis or the Economics module of Oxford
Scholarship Online for purchase. The ERC meets twice a month. Members include
Janice Adlington, Yvonne Boyer, David Carpenter, Sue
Erickson, John Haar, Susan Widmer, and Mary Beth Blalock.
We welcome your suggestions of electronic resources you think should be added
to our collection.

of Anthropology and attended her presentation. She also met with the Spanish
faculty liaison and the Director of the Center for the Americas regarding research

Widmer gave a Library tour for a faculty candidate in Italian Studies and met
with an Economics 226 student for a research consultation.

anthropology/archaeology collections.
David,
Sue Erickson, and Mary Beth began revising our CD-ROM procedures.

Government Information/Media Services (Amy Stewart-Mailhiot)
Larry Romans and Amy gave two bibliographic instruction sessions: PSCI 115 - Terrorism (Carroll) and NURS 249 (Fogel). Larry also prepared the Government Information section of the handout for HIST 295 - Race and Politics in Modern America (Fergus) for Peter Brush's BI session.
Larry and his students continue to work on updating web pages--specifically working on global warming, the Supreme Court, and other topics. Larry has been focusing on publications from international organizations--obtaining catalogs, filling gaps, and beginning to set up standing orders.
Larry attended the Tennessee Library Legislative Day to lobby for increased funds for the Tennessee Electronic Library (TEL). He talked with two Senators and two representatives. The initial $1 million additional appropriation from the Dept. of State had been dropped from the governor's budget, but it has been added back in the Senate and is going to the House.
Teri Bante continued her bindery project, collecting and processing more Census and State Department items. Teri also worked with Larry and Chris Waldrop to acquire some missing volumes for the OECD Economic Surveys series. As part of her regular monthly activities, Teri oversaw the processing and barcoding of our incoming depository items.
Teri oversaw the continuation of the inventory project. With the help of student assistants, she finished the Civil Rights Commission section and moved on to the Department of Justice items.
Amy conducted a training session for the graduate assistants, focusing on web resources and IRS forms. Teri also provided refresher training for students in Sudocs shelving.
With the semester underway, Brian Boling received fewer requests for reserves and new purchases from faculty. On the other hand, requests for assistance with microform materials increased sharply. Brian had the pleasure of introducing several patrons to the use of microform equipment and giving refresher lessons to several others.
Brian continued his examination of our in-house videotape collection with a focus on copyright compliance. He compiled a list of titles of questionable origin, so faculty can be consulted about which titles warranted priority replacement. Brian's other tasks included clarifying our copyright policy for faculty members and cleaning up the database from which we draw our genre and language lists.
Larry and Amy attended the memorial service for George Graham. George had served as the Political Science library liaison for a number of years prior to his death in November.
Amy completed her reference training and began working regular shifts on the reference desk. She also continued working on the issues of copyright and public performance rights for the video collection.
The GI/MS staff is happy to report that the items removed from the Annex last month are on their way to the University of North Texas. The run of Experiment Station Bulletins from the Department of Agriculture will soon be digitized by UNT and accessible via the Internet.

Welcome
to Ramona Romero!
We are pleased to have Ramona Romero as a new colleague.
Ramona began her new job as Reference Librarian and Bibliographer for Classics,
Philosophy, and Psychology on Feb. 26. She will join us in staffing reference
service after a period of orientation and training for her new job responsibilities.
David began Ramona's orientation and training to the library, its resources,
and work-related software on Feb. 27.
Amy
Stewart-Mailhiot Joins Central Reference Group:
We also welcomed Amy Stewart-Mailhiot to regular duty in staffing our
reference service in early February, after she completed her training. Reference
will certainly benefit from Amy's experience; her thorough knowledge of government
information and other subject areas; and her dedication to providing friendly,
helpful public service.
Special
Projects:
Sara Byrd devoted considerable time to working on a seating sweep project,
designed to collect information on the availability and use of study spaces
within the Heard libraries. Sara did an inventory and taxonomy of spaces within
Central Library, created and revised worksheets, and tested various recording
methods for the study. Her work on the project will likely continue through
April. The project planning group for this study met three times, and she met
twice with Julie Blagojevich. Sara reports: "Project members are
planning to meet again soon to finalize our plans. We will most likely make
a request to John Haar for student staffing assistance on this project."
Other
Activities and Training:
David provided a library tour for a Department of French & Italian faculty
candidate.
Sara pursued Dreamweaver training using ElementK.
