Connecting a Laptop Directly to Network Ports

A number of network ports have been installed in the General Library Building, which will allow patrons to bring their own network-ready laptops and connect them to the network. If you did not bring your own cable, cables are available for check-out at the Central Circulation Desk.

Electrical Outlets in the Central Library

On Floors 4-8 of the Central Library, the carrels along the walls in the stacks are the best places to use laptops because they have electrical outlets nearby.

Many carrels on Floors 4-8 along the windows have electrical outlets, and all of the large old wing carrels on Floors 4-8 have outlets. Patrons can check with Circulation for specific carrel numbers.

Use your laptop computer in these areas, and there is no need for an extension cord.

Printing From a Laptop

If you are a Vanderbilt student, faculty or staff member, you may configure your wireless laptop to use the VUPrint system and print from a public printer within the Central Library. You will need to make sure you have access to the Vanderbilt wireless network.

If you have not already configured your wireless laptop for the Vanderbilt network, you will find the instructions here. (VUNet ID is required to access the instructions. You will first see a page containing Vanderbilt's Computer Privileges and Responsibilities Policy. You will need to read the policy and click that you agree to abide by it before you can access the configuration information.)

Visitors and Vanderbilt patrons without wireless laptops will need to use a library public workstation in order to print.

(You will first see a page containing Vanderbilt's Computer Privileges and Responsibilities Policy. You will need to read the policy and click that you agree to abide by it before you can access the configuration information.)

If you need further assistance with making your laptop compatible with the campus network, support is available at the ITS Help Desk.

Use of computers in the Central Library is governed by the Vanderbilt University Computer Privileges and Responsibilities policy.
