CIRCULATION/RESERVE

Circulation Desk - Hours needed: days (after 9:00 a.m.), nights (until midnight), weekends (Friday until 10pm, Saturday 9am-10pm, Sunday, 11am-12 midnight). Duties: Check out books, check in books, collect library fines, give directional information about where things are in the Library, search for missing books, overdue books, shelf read and other miscellaneous duties. Lots of public contact and interaction with library users. Supervisor always present. Base wage: $8.00 an hour (undergraduates); $9.00 an hour (graduate students).

Stack Maintenance - Love books? Hate desk jobs? Prefer working behind the scenes? Want to use a little muscle as well as your brain? Want to wear your iPod at work? This could be your job. Hours: Primarily day shift (7:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.). Duties: Shelving books, sorting books in preparation for shelving, shifting books, and shelf-reading. Attention to detail required. Base wage: $8.50 an hour (undergraduates); $9.00 an hour (graduate students).

Once the hours you agree to work are established, you must work that schedule or find a substitute to work for you.

 

COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT

Student assistants will be trained to assist subject bibliographers with a variety of projects involving the use of the library's online catalog and/or other online catalogs, including bibliographic checking and gift book searching. Other responsibilities could include internet searching, order preparation and checking, catalog sorting, photocopying, and possibly, data entry. Students will be trained for all tasks, and previous experience is not necessary. We are looking for students who are self-motivated and capable of working independently. Attention to details and computer skills are important. Foreign language skills, such as German, French, Italian and Russian are very desirable, but not required. Work hours are scheduled during the times that the office is open, generally between 8 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Monday-Friday. Work schedules, once set, are expected to be followed, but when necessary, some flexibility is permitted. Base wage: $8.00 an hour (undergraduates); $8.50 an hour for jobs requiring intensive use of foreign language (undergraduates); $9.00 an hour (graduate students).

 

GOVERNMENT INFORMATION/MEDIA SERVICES

We have a variety of jobs, an easygoing staff, and flexible hours for general and computer-emphasis jobs.

General Undergraduate Jobs. Student assistants perform one or more of the following tasks: Check in and checking out videos; help process incoming government publications; shelve and maintain order in the collection; assist patrons in retrieving materials in the government information collection; check online catalog and other databases to prepare orders for new books; and perform other tasks as needed. Hours: Weekdays 9am-5pm, possible night and evening hours available. Base wage: $8.00 an hour.

Computer-Emphasis Jobs: Students with knowledge of HTML coding (or Dreamweaver or similar software) help maintain and correct library web pages and perform other computer-related duties, in addition to the general duties listed above. Base wage: $8.50 an hour.

Graduate Student Evening and Weekend Supervisors: Graduate assistants are responsible for the department on night and weekend shifts, including supervising the work of undergraduate assistants. This is a joint circulation/reference position. Duties include checking in and out videos, including video reserves, and providing basic reference service to patrons. Assistants are trained how to use paper, electronic and Internet reference sources. Graduate students also assist with the processing of government publications and other projects. Hours: night and weekend hours. Base wage: $9.00 an hour.
