Services for Patrons With Disabilities
The Central Library offers
the following special services for patrons with disabilities:
- Parking
and Building Access. If you enter on the 21st Avenue side of
the building, please use the power-assisted double doors to the older
building. A few feet inside the doors, there is a red telephone on the
wall that has directions to call for assistance, if needed. A staff
person will come down to meet you and will guide you up the key-access
elevator to the main level of the Central Library.
- Book and
Journal Retrieval. We will retrieve books, journals, and other Central
Library materials and deliver them to the Circulation Desk or other
specified locations in the library. Please inquire at the Circulation
Desk (322-2893).
- Photocopying.
We will photocopy documents for disabled patrons with advance notice.
We will need to use your Vendacard to charge the copies. Please inquire
at the Circulation Desk (322-2893).
- Acorn and Databases.
We offer training for all patrons in using Acorn and our online databases,
and we can provide special training for disabled patrons. We can also
train readers to use these tools to assist visually impaired patrons.
Please ask at the Reference Desk (322-2407).
Specialized equipment
available:
- Computer
screens with enlarged fonts. We can enlarge the fonts on our monitors.
Please ask for this service at the Reference Desk (322-2407).
- Closed-circuit
television workstation. The library's closed circuit television (CCTV)
workstation is located in the Central Library Payne Reading Room (Room 612). The CCTV
workstation uses a video camera to magnify printed materials and other
items placed on a tray below the camera. The device can provide magnification
up to 57X, for both color and monochrome images. Please ask for help
at the Reference Desk (322-2407).
- Software
for vision-impaired computer users. ZoomText (software that enlarges,
enhances and reads aloud text on the screen) and JAWS (screen reader
software) are available on two workstations located on the fourth level
of the library. These two workstations are labeled as "Adaptive
Workstations." One is located in the Reference Room and the other
one is located in the group of workstations adjacent to the Circulation
Desk. For assistance inquire at the Reference Desk (322-2407).
