Databases: Indexes to Articles and Books

  • L'Année Philologique on the Web, v. 30, 1959-
An indispensible tool for serious research. Indexes books, book reviews, articles, Festschrifte, and other collections dealing with the ancient Greek and Roman world, from the second millennium BCE to approximately 800 CE. Because APh covers worldwide scholarly publishing, in many languages, the Vanderbilt library will only have some of the items referenced. A guide to the database and its various quirks is also available.
  • TOCS-IN: Tables of Contents of Journals of Interest to Classicists (free online database)
A good starting index for recent articles. Indexes approximately 85 Classics journals, 1992 onwards, as well as additional titles in Archaeology, Religion, and Near Eastern Studies. While many of these journals are also covered by L'Année Philologique, the Vanderbilt Library owns a higher percentage of the sources included in TOCS-IN. Some pre-1992 articles are now being added, along with articles in Festschriften and conference proceedings. Does not cover electronic journals or book reviews.
  • Dyabola
Dyabola, based on the collection of the Deutsches Archäologische Institut, indexes material on all areas of Mediterranean and and Near Eastern archaeology and philology from prehistory to the Byzantine era. published from 1956 through the present (update frequency varies). Citations for books, book reviews, chapters, articles, and festschriften are included.
  • Gnomon Online (free online database)
The online supplement to Gnomon Bibliographische Datenbank: indexes books, book articles, and some journals, 1997 onwards.
  • Periodicals Index Online (Formerly PCI, Periocials Contents Index)
Indexes a small number of Classics journals from their first issue up to 1990. Far from comprehensive, but worth a quick search.
  • Philosopher's Index
Includes references to articles, books, and book reviews on ancient philosophers.
  • MLA International Bibliography
Useful for comparative literature: if you are interested in comparing a classical text to a more modern one (e.g., something written during the medieval period up to contemporary literature). However, the MLA does not otherwise cover sources for classical literature.
