Overdue Materials

Overdue notices are sent to remind borrowers about their overdue materials. A maximum of three overdue notices are sent on overdue items. For most circulating material, there is a 28 day grace period which allows for materials to be returned up to 28 days past the due date without charge. After 28 days, the grace period no longer applies. Fines then accrue from the original due date. See Location Tables for materials with grace periods. Failure to return or renew an item will result in the borrower being billed for the item. Charges include the price of the item, a replacement fee ($35.00) and a billing fee ($15.00). These fees are non-refundable if the material is returned damaged or after a replacement has been ordered. Borrowing privileges for non-students may be suspended immediately if the amount owed to the Library exceeds $100.00. Borrowing privileges are suspended after one month if charges are not paid by staff, alumni and other Library Use card holders. Charges may be paid with cash, check, or credit card/check card. The library currently accepts Visa and Mastercard. Student charges not paid after one month are transferred to Student Accounts for collection. Borrowing privileges are not suspended.

Excessive overdue books or overdue fines may automatically block borrowing privileges.

Users can renew their own materials using ACORN or renew them at any other Library on campus until the renewal limit on the item is reached. At that time the item must be brought back to the Library from which it was borrowed to be renewed. Materials cannot be renewed by telephone or mail at Central Library.

Want to avoid overdue fines? It's possible if you have an email address! If you request that your library notices be sent email, you will receive notices on materials you have checked out before they are due and on the date they are due! Ask at Circulation to have your address updated or use the email request form on the web.
