AUCTION INFORMATION
ONLINE RESOURCES
Note that
many auction websites require registration and subscription fees, so included
below are a few that allow free access to some portion of their information
and/or databases.
- Sotheby's
(http://www.sothebys.com/): You can
search or browse for lots in the online or live auctions. You need to register
only if you intend to bid on an item.
- Christie's
(http://www.christies.com/home_page/home_page.asp):
Information about upcoming sales is put on the web site as soon as the catalog
is published (up to 2 months before the sale); images are available online
until the day after the sale, but the catalog text remains for a month after
the sale. Also useful might be the glossary of terms. You need to register
only if you intend to bid on an item.
- Fine
Arts Trade/ArtPrice.com
(http://art-trade.com/art-trade.com_finearts_index.html):
Click on "enter" to get to the search box (at top center of page).
It does not cost to search for the list of the works by an artist.
- AskArt.com
(http://www.askart.com): This web site
covers only American artists. Some information is free; for example, the images
of paintings that have been up for sale are free for browsing, but if you
want the title of the painting and auction information, you need to pay for
a subscription. The other information on the site may be useful: the biographies
are written by galleries (so the information is not necessarily authoritative),
and the books and periodicals listing isn't much better than what you would
find in the three art databases.
But the list of museums that hold works by that artist may be useful in tracking
down online images.
