Levi Watkins, Jr., MD became the first African American student at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine when he enrolled in 1966. Dr. Watkins graduated in 1970 to become the first African American to graduate from Vanderbilt School of Medicine.
Dr. Watkins later became the first black chief surgical resident at Johns Hopkins, and then professor of cardiac surgery at JHU. Dr. Watkins also served as a member of the Vanderbilt Board of Trust.
