Historical or Biographical Note

Mary Phillips Gray was born in Evanston, Illinois, in 1914. She received her B.A. in Biology and Chemistry from Vanderbilt University in 1935 and her Ph.D. in Anatomy from Vanderbilt Medical School in 1940. She joined the Vanderbilt faculty in 1941 and remained at Vanderbilt in various capacities throughout her life. Mary Phillips Gray was a wonderful teacher and over the years she worked and published with many of Vanderbilt's most distinguished investigators.
