Historical or Biographical Note

Ms. Helen Frances Zeigler served as the second dean of Vanderbilt University School of Nursing serving in that role from 1938 until her retirement in 1949. A native of Alabama, she received a diploma in nursing from Johns Hopkins School of Nursing and a Bachelor of Science degree from Columbia University. Prior to coming to Vanderbilt, she served as educational director of the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing and Health as well as the dean of the School of Nursing at the Medical College of Virginia. While at Vanderbilt, she pursued and attained accreditation from the National League for Nursing Education for the basic nursing program in 1941. She died February 15, 1963 in Winter Park, Florida.
