Historical or Biographical Note

John Slowko Zelenik was professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, and served as acting chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecolgy from 1974 to 1976. Born in Chicago, Feb 21, 1911 he received his MD from the University of Illinois in 1940. Prior to coming to Vanderbilt, he served in the army during World War II, Korea and Vietnam, and attained the rank of colonel before retiring in 1966. Among his military assignments, he served as chief of the department of surgery at Tripler General Hospital in Honolulu. He also served on the faculty of the University of Illinois Medical School in Chicago, and the University of Colorado Medical School in Denver. Involved in numerous professional organizations, and widely published, he joined the faculty at Vanderbilt in 1968. He died in Nashville May 25, 1979.
