Historical or Biographical Note

Dr. William Byrd Young, Nashville businessman and physician was born November 13, 1865 in Cottage Grove, Henry County, Tennessee. He received his MD from the Medical Department of the University of Tennessee in 1888. Following graduation he was appointed physician and surgeon for the Bon Air Coal, Land and Lumber Company. He was also elected Professor of Gynecology of the medical department of the University of the South at Sewanee, and helped organize the Upper Cumberland Medical Society and was for a time the editor of its monthly journal, Country Doctor. Dr. Young ceased his medical career in 1903 when he was named Manager of the Clifty Coal and Coke Company. In 1920, he was named general superintendent of the Bon Air Coal and Iron Corporation. When this merged with other companies, to form the Tennessee Products Corporation, he was promoted to vice president. Retiring in 1937, he died on January 3, 1944 in Nashville.
