Historical or Biographical Note

Dr. Calvin Watts Woodruff, pediatrician and expert on nutritional deficiency diseases in infants and children, was a member of the faculty in the School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, before his departure in June, 1960 to become professor and chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at the American University in Beirut, Lebanon. Born July 16, 1920 in New Haven Connecticut , he received both his BA and MD degrees from Yale University. He came to Vanderbilt in 1947 as an assistant resident in Pediatrics. He also was a fellow in the Division of Nutrition. He later was a member of the faculty at University of Missouri, Columbia. He died May 10, 1989 in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
