Historical or Biographical Note

Dr. Lester F. Williams was appointed Professor of Surgery and Chief of Surgery at the Nashville Veterans Administration Hopital in July, 1985. He came to Vanderbilt from Boston University School of Medicine. He received his undergraduate degree from Brown University and his MD from Boston University, after which he completed his residency at Tripler Army Hospital. Dr. Williams remained on the Vanderbilt Faculty until his death in February, 2003. At the time of his death, Dr. Williams was Chief of Surgery at St. Thomas Hospital. Dr. Williams was known as a surgeon's surgeon and supervised the training of many young surgeons over a span of more than three decades.
