Historical or Biographical Note

Dr. Edwin Lea Williams was born in 1917 in Maryville, Tennessee. After graduating from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1942, he completed an internship and residency training in Obstetrics/Gynecology at Vanderbilt University Hospital. He also served as the chief resident in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Vanderbilt University. Following completion of his specialty training and active military duty, Dr. Williams entered private practice in Nashville. His office was initially located in the Medical Arts Building and he hospitalized all his patients at Vanderbilt University Hospital. During his several years in practice, he received one of highest compliments a physician can receive-he was entrusted with the care of the wives of many physicians, medical students, and house officers at Vanderbilt. Dr. Williams was an active participant in the teaching and training programs for medical students and house officers at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He died in 1974
