Historical or Biographical Note

Dr. William Orren Vaughan was a longtime Nashville pediatrician. Born May 6, 1906, he was a native of Mayfield Kentucky and was the son of William Thomas and Gertrude Holland Vaughan. He graduated from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1932, and completed a residency at Vanderbilt in 1934. He continued his association with Vanderbilt first serving on the clinical staff beginning in 1935 as an assistant in clinical pediatrics, then as a clinical instructor beginning in 1938. In 1941, he began his service as a member of the clinical faculty as an assistant clinical professor of pediatrics. In 1950 he became associate clinical professor and served in that role until his death on December 19, 1974. Widely respected by his peers, he was elected to the board of trustees of the Tennessee State Medical Association in 1958, and served as president of the association in 1961.
