Historical or Biographical Note

Cornelius Vanderbilt is the namesake of Vanderbilt University. He was a successful 19th century shipping and railroad magnate who was among the wealthiest entrepreneurs in history. His initial gift of 1 million dollars for the establishment of a university was the largest single charitable gift ever made in American history up to that time.
