Historical or Biographical Note

Nelson O Tyrone, Jr. graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1961 and received his MD from Tulane University in 1965. He completed his surgical residency in surgical urology from the University of Virginia, and did a fellowship at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital in New York. He practiced medicine in Columbus, Georgia until his death in 1987 at the age of 45. In 1997 Frederick B. Rentschler, a 1961 Vanderbilt graduate endowed a chair in the Department of History at Vanderbilt in honor of for his late friend and former undergraduate roommate Dr. Tyrone. It is the Nelson O. Tyrone, Jr. Chair in the History of Medicine.
