Historical or Biographical Note

Dr. Dorothy Jean Turner, was born August 27, 1927 daughter of James Riley Turner and Pauline Sanford Turner. She earned her bachelor's and medical degrees from Vanderbilt receiving the latter in 1959. Following her residency training in Cleveland, Ohio, she returned to Vanderbilt and served on the faculty beginning in 1963 as an instructor in pediatrics and was elevated to assistant professor of pediatrics 1968 and served in that role in until 1970 when she started working as a public health officer for the Tennessee Department of Health. She maintained her association with Vanderbilt serving Assistant Clinical Professor in Pediatrics and in Preventive Medicine beginning in 1971. She died January 27, 1999. In 2007, an endowed chair in the department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics named for Dr. Turner and her sister Jacqueline was established in their honor through a bequest of the Turner family to aid in the promotion of diabetes research. Dr. Alan Cherrington is the first holder of this endowed chair.
