Historical or Biographical Note

Robert C. Schlant, M.D., graduated from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1951 and completed his training in cardiology under Louis Dexter, M.D., at the Pent Bent Brigham Hospital in 1958. He was then appointed to the faculty at Emory University School of Medicine and served as the director of the division of cardiology from 1962 to 1988. His career in national organizations was extensive, having assumed major roles in the American Heart Association and the Board of Trustees of the American College of Cardiology. Schlant was president of the Association of University Cardiologists from 1982 to 1983 and was chair of the Oral Examination Committee of the American Board of Internal Medicine Cardiology Board from 1975 to 1978. The AHA recognized his distinguished service by awarding him the Distinguished Achievement Award in 1990 and the James B. Herrick Award in 1994.
