Historical or Biographical Note

Charles Madison Sarratt served Vanderbilt from 1917 to 1978 as professor, as chair of the Department of Mathematics, as dean of men, dean of students, dean of student life, vice-chancellor emeritus, and dean of alumni.

Madison Houston Sarratt received his B.S. degree from Vanderbilt in 1944. He was awarded his M.D. degree from Vanderbilt University in 1947 and served as chief resident from 1953-1954. In May 1958, he became a Diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Sarratt was a clinical professor in his field at Vanderbilt, and he served in the United States Navy Medical Corps during the Korean War, returning to Nashville after three years. He held a private practice until 1998.
