Historical or Biographical Note

James Davidson Rives received his undergraduate education at Vanderbilt University, where he graduated with honors in mathematics in 1914. He attended medical school at Tulane University, graduating in 1918. He interned at Touro Infirmary in New Orleans from 1918-1919 and became an assistant in clinical surgery at Tulane in 1919.

After serving as an instructor of operative surgery from 1926-1927 and as assistant professor of clinical surgery from 1927-1931 at Tulane, Rives embarked upon a long tenure on the faculty at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine, where he directed the surgical residency program and served as professor of clinical surgery. He headed the department from 1947-1962, when he became professor emeritus. Additionally, Rives served as president of the Southern Surgical Association from 1957-1958.
