Historical or Biographical Note

Charles Pittinger, M.D., emeritus professor of medicine and a leader in the development of safer anesthesiology methods, passed away in 1990 at the age of 77. Pittinger was a former chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and served on the faculty from 1962 until his retirement in 1978. He was renowned for his research and writing in pharmacology and anesthesiology, as well as his development of new methods for delivering anesthesia to pregnant women and those on antibiotics. Pittinger received his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1949. his internship and residency were performed at the University of Iowa.
