Historical or Biographical Note

David R. Pickens Jr. graduated from Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt Medical School (1944). He interned at Western Reserve University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, and was a resident in urology at Roosevelt Hospital in New York City, in general surgery at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville, and at Belluevue Hospital, New York City. He was a resident in thoracic surgery at Triboro Hospital, New York City.

Pickens served as associate clinical professor of surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical School from 1968-1990. He specialized in general surgery in Nashville, Tennessee, from 1952-1990. He was also a captain in the Medical Corps, United States Army, as well as a member of several medical associations.
