Historical or Biographical Note

William Harold Payne was educated at Macedon Academy, New York, and at the New York Conference Seminary. Payne served as superintendent of public schools in Michigan from 1879-1887 prior to his appointment as chancellor of the University of Nashville and president of Peabody Normal College in 1887. He authored Chapters on School Supervision (Cincinnati, 1875),  Outlines of Educational Doctrine (Adrain, Michigan, 1882), and  Contributions to the Science of Education (New York, 1887). Additionally, Payne edited David P. Pages's  Theory and Practice Teaching (New York, 1885) and Gabriel Compayrde's  History of Pedagogy (Boston, 1886) and  Lectures on Pedagogy (1887).
