Historical or Biographical Note

Dr. Charles R. Park received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins Medical School in 1941. Park was appointed professor and chair of the Department of Physiology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1952. His laboratory was prominently known for its studies of hormonal control of carbohydrate metabolism. Park demonstrated in 1955 that insulin acts by promoting the transport of glucose across the cell membrane in the isolated diaphragm muscle of the rat. The excellence of the Park laboratory was largely responsible for the selection of Vanderbilt University for establishment of the first USPHS Diabetes and Endocrinology Research Center in 1973.
