Historical or Biographical Note

Dr. Carl S. McMurray was born in Nashville on July 25, 1896. He graduated with a medical degree from Vanderbilt in 1917. The surgeon was a member of the Board of Directors for American Cancer Society, a fellow in the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the Southern Medical Society, Society for the study of Internal Secretions, Southeastern Surgical Society, Nashville Academy of Medicine (former President), American and Tennessee Medical Association, Blood Bank Committee, Nashville Academy of Medicine Advisory Committee, and the Red Cross Blood Bank.

Dr. McMurray specialized in surgery and gynecology and was an assistant professor at Vanderbilt and Meharry Medical College. He also served as the surgical staff at General, Baptist, and St. Thomas hospitals. In 1954 he was named Chief of Staff at Baptist Hospital.
