Historical or Biographical Note

Joseph Edward Murray, M.D., D.Sc., served as a visiting professor for the Vanderbilt Transplant Center's second Shumway Lectureship Endowmen Series program in 1993. Murray, a Nobel laureate, performed the first successful human renal transplant in 1954. He also performed the first successful kidney transplant just two years after he was board certified in general surgery.
